Keeping Your Eyes in Good Health

Having healthy eyes and optimal vision enables us to live life fully. In fact, you may not even consider your eyes until there’s an issue with your vision. But eye exams are essential for detecting problems that could be developing without symptoms. Having a professional attend to your eye health also opens the door to understanding your eye health, so together, we can keep it in the best possible condition.

So, whether you need an updated prescription or you’ve never had an eye exam before, the team at Radiant Eyecare would love to see you. We’ll teach you why it’s vital to see an eye doctor regularly and empower you to take charge of your health.

How Often Should You Visit an Optometrist?

When you see well and don’t experience eye-related symptoms, there’s no need to see the optometrist, right? Well, some eye diseases and conditions could develop without any obvious signs. And, for children, they don’t have a baseline of “good vision” to compare to, so even if they think they see well, there could be an undiagnosed refractive error affecting their quality of life.

Everyone’s eye care needs differ, so your exam frequency will depend on your eye health. For example, if you have a preexisting medical condition or family history of eye disease, we may recommend more frequent exams. But, generally, we follow the recommended exam schedule set forth by the American Optometric Association:

  • 0 to 2: first eye exam between 6 and 12 months
  • 3 to 5: at least 1 eye exam during this period
  • 6 to 17: 1 exam before first grade and annually after that
  • 18 to 64: at least every 2 years
  • 65 and older: annual eye exams

All About Your Eye Exam

Comprehensive eye exams are much more than just a vision screening. We’ll assess how clearly you can see and evaluate your eye health by looking at the interior and exterior structures of your eyes, how well they’re functioning, and if there are any signs of eye disease.

Eye Diseases We Can Detect

When you have great vision and no symptoms of eye health issues, it might be easy to think you won’t develop eye conditions or disease. But often, eye diseases can develop without any apparent symptoms. Visiting us for an eye exam puts you ahead of vision-threatening diseases before they worsen. Some of the key eye conditions and diseases we detect include:

Eye exams are also helpful in identifying some general health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high cholesterol.

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam is just that. It’s a multi-faceted, thorough assessment that gives us a complete blueprint of your eye health. After the initial conversation about your eye health, medical history, and any concerns you have, we’ll move into the exam, which includes the following:

  • Retinal imaging
  • Pupil dilation to give us a better window to look inside your eyes
  • Intraocular pressure testing to check the pressure levels inside your eyes (this is part of glaucoma screening)
  • Visual field testing used to evaluate your peripheral vision
  • Depth perception testing
  • Slit-lamp exam to examine the structures of your eye
  • Color vision testing
  • Testing how well your eyes work together
  • Visual acuity testing to detect a refractive error that determines whether you need a prescription
